Workshop on Watershed Management
Bronwyn's Council Preview |
The City Council meeting starts at 6 p.m. this Tuesday in Council Chambers. The agenda includes (but is not limited to):
Joint meeting with the Human Relations Commission.
-
1. Discussion regarding the purpose and activities of the Ames Human Relations Commission.
In May, we met with the Human Relations Commission while they delivered their annual report. Now we are meeting with them again to discuss their priorities/responsibilities as a commission. One item of discussion will be how Ames handles claims of discrimination in areas like housing and employment. Options are to handle them in-house through the Ames HRC, or to contract with the Iowa Civil Rights Commission to investigate such claims. Both Iowa State University and the Ames Community School District have been invited to participate in this workshop as well.
The Special City Council Meeting will immediately follow the Joint Meeting of the Ames City Council and Ames Human Relations Commission.
-
1. Workshop on Watershed Management.
This presentation will cover how watersheds contribute to water quality, and how to best strategize for our upcoming nutrient reduction requirements. The Iowa DNR's requirements for 'point sources' (cities/towns) include reducing total Nitrogen that enters our facility by 66% and reducing total Phosphorus by 75%. (We are currently removing 36% and 19%, respectively.) Achieving the DNR standard will need to include careful watershed management in addition to improvements at the treatment plant.
