Ames City Council Resolution on the Healthy Life Center
Bronwyn's Council Preview |
On the upcoming agenda (for 8/27/2019) is a resolution of support for the Healthy Life Center. In addition to this resolution, Council has voted several times to proceed with the project, indicating broad support. I have supported the Healthy Life Center concept from its inception, and I would like to take this opportunity to endorse it once more! I will be voting 'Yes' on September 10th.
The Healthy Life Center features health and wellness programs and facilities, including walking track, indoor aquatic center (as the current indoor pool will be gone in 2020), and gymnasium. It will also serve all generations, making it an important place of social connection and an amenity for young and old alike. It will feature educational programs that teach the benefits (including financial) of health and wellness as way to improve quality of life and prevent disease and injury. Finally, the Healthy Life Center is an unprecedented collaboration between the City, County, ISU, Mary Greeley, Heartland Senior Services, and DMACC.

Following is the City press release on future educational meetings:
- Three final public informational meetings on the proposed Healthy Life Center have been scheduled. Each meeting will provide an overview of the project, including proposed plans, amenities, and costs. This will be followed by a question and answer period.
The meetings will all be held at Ames Public Library, 515 Douglas Ave., on the following days: - The Healthy Life Center uses a holistic, intergenerational approach to wellness focusing on health and nutrition education, physical activities, social networking, and learning and research opportunities. The facility would include an indoor warm-water aquatic center, indoor walking track and three basketball courts, indoor children’s play structure, demonstration kitchen for cooking and nutrition classes, meeting rooms, and more. The Healthy Life Center would be located north of Ontario Street and west of Scholl Road.
The project’s partners are the City of Ames, Mary Greeley Medical Center, Iowa State University, Des Moines Area Community College, Story County, and Heartland Senior Services. The partners, together with donations, will bring $20 million in funding to the project. The balance would be funded through a bond referendum on Tuesday, Sept. 10.
For Ames property owners, the impact of approving the bond referendum is estimated at $44 per year for residential property per $100,000 of assessed valuation and $70 per year for commercial/industrial property per $100,000 of assessed valuation.
