2. Discussion on Climate Action Plan Document.
Finally, a long-awaited update on our Climate Action Plan. Last time, Council got a report about the "6 Big Moves", which include:
- Renewable Energy Generation
- Building Retrofits
- Net-Zero New Construction
- Reduction in Vehicle Emissions
- Increase in Active Transportation/Transit Use
- Reduction in Waste Emissions
The report for Tuesday's meeting mentions two notable changes since our last update. First, our emissions reduction targets have decreased slightly, to a 71% reduction in GHG by 2030 and a 94% reduction by 2050. (Down from 83% and net-zero, respectively.) Second, estimates of the overall cost of implementing the suggested changes has gone up from $2.4 to $3.2 billion. (These are not all costs that will be borne by the City, and some cost savings will be realized during the process.) The report also lists action steps and a proposed first-year action plan for Council.
