The Ames City Council meets at 6:00 p.m. at City Hall. The agenda includes the following. Note that you can generally click on individual agenda items below to get the full staff report or other explanation.
- 31. Ames Economic Development Commission Presentation of Annual Report
There was no linked report with this item. Annually, the City of Ames pays $165,000 to the AEDC ($150,000 for contractual services, and another $15,000 for their workforce development program). - 32. Staff report on Selling Alcoholic Beverages during events at the Ames City Auditorium.
Auditorium staff suggest that attendance might be better if the consumption of alcohol were to be allowed during (most) programing at the City Auditorium. Staff outline estimates for revenue if the sales of alcohol were handled by City staff, but also what those revenues might look like if the sales were conducted by a contracted company. The recommendation is to proceed with allowing the sales of alcohol by a contracted (yet to be determined) company. - 33. Resolution approving demolishing the buildings on the Sands-McDorman property once it is owned by the City.
There are five buildings on the Sands-McDorman property, two of which are in rough structural shape. This report details the findings by staff on the remaining buildings. Council will be asked to direct staff on whether to retain any of the structurally sound buildings that remain on the property. - 35. Staff Report on Parking Standards for Retail.
Council directed staff to look at our parking requirements for retail establishments, and staff are reporting back on three potential options. First, Council can consider reducing or removing the requirement for off-street parking for only certain types of retail establishments (thrift stores, for example). The second presented option is to consider reducing or removing the requirement for off-street parking for all retail. Finally, Council could direct staff to consider how much space a retail store is using for storage, and subtract that from the parking requirement. (Staff do not favor the third option, due to it being cumbersome to track and manage such a system.) - 36. Staff Report on Paving Standards of Unpaved Parking Lots.
Council is being asked to consider allowing people with unpaved gravel driveways and parking areas to pave them, even if they wouldn't otherwise be allowed to. Currently, in order to pave a new driveway, there are location, size, and impervious surface-area limitations. - 38. Hearing on Zoning Text Amendment on Setback Encroachments for Accessory Structures and first passage of ordinance.
Communications to Council: The following items are requests and communications to Council that aren't published on the agenda, so we won't deliberate them substantially. This includes staff reports and communications or requests from constituents and developers. Typically, Council will ask city staff for more information, put the item on a future agenda for deliberation and possible action, or just accept the communication, taking no further action.
