Usually some of the agenda items will have a period where members of the public may briefly speak to Council.
TO REACH THE MAYOR AND ENTIRE CITY COUNCIL:
Send email to MayorCouncil@AmesCityCouncil.org
(Note that emails to elected officials are generally subject to Iowa Open Records requests)
The Ames City Council meeting is at 6 p.m. at City Hall. The agenda includes the following. Note that you can generally click on individual agenda items below to get the full staff report or other explanation.
- 27. Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) Public Outreach Summary
Over the past few months, staff have been conducting outreach on the topic of accessory dwelling units (ADUs). In brief, an ADU (like a granny flat) could be a small (900 sq ft max) stand-alone building or converted garage that could be used for residence. The current proposal contains a requirement that the property owner live either at the primary residence or the ADU. Public input was sought through surveys, meetings, and pop-up events (like the Eco Fair), yielding 325 contacts (187 of which were through the on-line survey). -
28. Duplexes Public Outreach Summary.
During the same several months as the ADU outreach, staff also sought opinions on allowing duplexes. The feedback received was much less than that for ADUs, with only 45 respondents expressing an opinion about duplexes. -
29. Staff Report on Paving Exceptions for Pullman Street and Carnegie Avenue.
This item is in response to a request Council received regarding a property on Pullman Street (near E Lincoln Way and Dayton Ave.). The property owner is hoping to make minor improvements to the property, but this kicks in the City's requirement for them to pave their street (currently gravel) and connect to sanitary sewer. Due to the small size and scale of the property and the desired improvements, this requirement is too financially burdensome for the property owner to consider, so they are requesting we waive the paving and utility requirements. -
30. Presentation of the 2023 Resident Satisfaction Survey Results.
I can't believe it's already this time of year again. Every year when the leaves drop, so do the results of our annual Citizen Satisfaction Survey. This year is similar to past years, with very high overall rankings though some of the funding priorities have shifted slightly over time. Go ahead and read the comments for a good time. -
31. Resolution formalizing updated Partner City Agreement with Koshu City, Japan.
It is the 30th anniversary of our partner city agreement with Koshu City, Japan, we are reaffirming our commitment to that Partner City Agreement. -
32. Staff Report on Property Maintenance Code corresponding changes to Chapters 18, 22 & 29.
You might recall that we recently passed a Property Maintenance Code pertaining to the exterior of owner-occupied properties. As part of that discussion, staff foreshadowed a need to modify other chapters of city code that relate (such as the Chapter on zoning or the Chapter on parking). -
33. Outdoor Displays on City-Owned Property.
This proposed policy would allow only city-owned ongoing displays on city-owned property. (Temporary signs or displays would still be allowed, for a rally for example.)
Communications to Council: The following items are requests and communications to Council that aren't published on the agenda, so we won't deliberate them substantially. This includes staff reports and communications or requests from constituents and developers. Typically, Council will ask city staff for more information, put the item on a future agenda for deliberation and possible action, or just accept the communication, taking no further action.
