Usually some of the agenda items will have a period where members of the public may briefly speak to Council.
TO REACH THE MAYOR AND ENTIRE CITY COUNCIL:
Send email to MayorCouncil@AmesCityCouncil.org
(Note that emails to elected officials are generally subject to Iowa Open Records requests)
The Ames City Council meeting is at 6 p.m. at City Hall. The agenda includes the following. Note that you can generally click on individual agenda items below to get the full staff report or other explanation.
This will be my last meeting as an At-Large Council member. In January, I will begin my 2-year term as Ward 1's representative. I will continue to do the Preview newsletters, though! (Also my apologies for the brevity of this particular Preview newsletter, it is a busy time of year, so I got started a little later than typical.)
Thank you all very much for reading, for offering your input, and for your support. See you in 2024!

26. 5th Street Brick Piers with Ceramic Reliefs.
We have gotten a lot of feedback on this topic, so we are revisiting it. (Initially, based on the recommendation of the Public Art Commission and staff's cost estimate to repair vs remove, Council decided to decommission and remove the pillars.) Council will listen to any additional/new public input and hear from the Public Art Commission before deciding how to proceed with the 5th St. brick piers. -
27. Budget Guidelines for COTA and Outside Funding Requests.
This item was delayed from last week's agenda. -
28. Daley Park Splashpad Update.
Council is being asked to decide between a recirculating water system or a pass-through one. The recirculating system has higher installation/labor costs but lower operational costs over time, plus is more sustainable due to the reduction in water needed to operate the splash pad. -
30. Review of Ames Plan 2040 Redirection Areas.
Staff have prepared a presentation and are asking for Council direction on several potential "Redirection Areas", a concept introduced in Plan 2040. Staff mention a few as possible top priorities, including south of campus in the Hunt/Knapp area, and west of campus, from Lincoln Way to Oakland on the north and west to Colorado/Hawthorne. Another property, off of Harrison Rd, is already owned by the city, vacant, and has some potential for a small housing development. Other redevelopment areas, such as the area around Northwestern and Grand, may tie in to Downtown master planning, when we get to that.

31. Hearing on Text Amendment for Public Nuisance “Property Maintenance” Related Changes to the Ames Municipal Code.
Our recently adopted Property Maintenance code isn't due to go into effect until January, in order to make any changes needed to definitions or other related code sections. This text amendment straightens up some definitions and code sections in response to Council direction from October 10th's meeting.
Communications to Council: The following items are requests and communications to Council that aren't published on the agenda, so we won't deliberate them substantially. This includes staff reports and communications or requests from constituents and developers. Typically, Council will ask city staff for more information, put the item on a future agenda for deliberation and possible action, or just accept the communication, taking no further action.
