The Long Range Transportation Plan...taking us to 2040
The Ames City Council begins at 6:00 PM Sept 22nd with the Ames Area Metropolitan Planning Organization Transportation Policy Committee.
The Regular City Council Meeting will immediately follow. The agenda includes items:
-
35. Resolution approving/motion denying Minor Final Plat for 3915 Mortensen Road (Ames Middle School). The Ames City Council has adopted a Complete Streets policy in an effort to make transportation, including biking and walking, safer for all ages and all incomes. The Ames Community School District is asking the City to waive their expectation of an 8' bike path on Dotson Drive, because they have already built a 6' sidewalk there. There appears to have been confusion on whether this wider path was requested or required. The most disappointing part to me is that the City of Ames and the Ames Community School District are finding it hard to work together to make bike and pedestrian travel safer for all residents, including Ames students. Fixing this oversight could cost over $40,000. It would have been a whole lot cheaper to make it safer the first time. Approximating a cost of $4.75 per square foot of sidewalk, the total dollars saved for the 900' stretch by going with a 6' sidewalk vs. an 8' sidewalk, is less than $12,000. $12k for a safer path to the Ames Middle School for students for the next 30 to 40 years...if we can't come together on that, on what can we?
-
36. Resolution approving Preliminary Plat for 5400 Grant Avenue (Haydens Crossing).
-
38. Staff report follow-up on 519-521 6th Street properties Request for Proposals.
