Work shop on CyRide Issues and Complete Streets Policy

The Ames City Council begins at 6:00 PM Oct 20th. The agenda includes items:

  • 1. Joint Meeting of the Ames City Council and Ames Transit Board.

The cost of CyRide is escalating, due to increased student enrollment and also the fare free model for student rides instituted in 2001. Currently, the cost to a student is .76 per ride, while its a $1.25 per ride for non students. Equity would suggest that it be a priority to bring these costs into parity, especially as the non-student riders are some of the most economically challenged users of CyRide. Iowa State University may have to consider the great value our system brings to their property holdings by way of deferred parking, and support fairness at the fare box as a result. I am confident we will work through these inequities and continue to be the proud keepers of one of the best transit systems in the country.
  • 2. Discussion Regarding Developing a Complete Streets Policy. Complete streets are the future of the built communities. Let's see if Ames is ready!
