Ames Airport Improvements: 76% of Ames Residents just aren't feelin' it
The Ames City Council begins at 6:00 PM. The agenda includes:
-
15. Resolution approving Engineering Services Agreement with WHKS & Co., of Ames, Iowa, for Flood Mitigation - River Flooding, in an amount not to exceed $138,000. While the plan to increase the flow of the Skunk river through Ames is economical; it comes with the hidden cost of loosing all moral authority when asking cities, counties, drainage districts and individual farmers who are up stream of Ames to spend their dollars to slow the flow of water in to Ames. This action encourages them to follow our example and speed the flow of water toward Ames.
-
24. Resolution approving Final Major Plat for Quarry Estates. Development will continue to fill out in North Ames for years to come. This is the first of many new homes in the City of Ames.
-
29. Presentation of results of Resident Satisfaction Survey. The survey is accurate to within 4.25%, meaning that if we asked every Ames resident their opinion, the true answer would be, at the worst 4.5% different. Therefore, these results, within 5% error up or down, represent the desires of the Ames community. As always this document is amazing. There are great insights in it. The question always is, what will the Ames City Council do with them? Usually the results can be close and inconclusive, but there is a result this year that we have never seen before; the community's lack of support for the Ames Municipal Airport Improvement. You can see that our residents rate the Airport as a record low priority of 24% favoring it among other capital investments. Ouch. This airport's approval rating is tied with Richard Nixon's approval rating in August, 1974, the month he resigned. So again the question is not how do Ames residents feel about this project, they support it at record low levels. The real question is; what will the council do with the knowledge of such overwhelming resident antipathy towards this project?
-
31. Request from Ames Community Solar Initiative. Ames could be a leader in solar, if the current council will ask for the additional resources necessary to explore this exciting opportunity. Tax credits cease to be available at the end of 2016, hopefully the council will find a way to make this happen.
-
32. Staff Report on creation of Urban Revitalization Area for 3505 and 3515 Lincoln Way. This is an exciting new mixed use project. I wish council had not agreed to abate this property years ago.
-
35. Hearing on rezoning with Master Plan of property at 601 and 705 Dotson Drive from Government-Airport (S-GA) to Floating Suburban Residential Low Density (FS-RL). This is a great example of infill. Thanks to the Ames Community School District for seeing the opportunity here and having the patience to make it happen well.
